How to host a family picnic at home
We love picnics, and with the recent sunny weather we’ve had plenty of chances to try out our new picnic basket. With the patio finished, we set up a VE Day–themed picnic at home — a simple way to make a special family moment during lockdown. (I also have an afternoon tea post for an indoor version.)

I’m really fond of the wicker picnic set from Beau & Elliot. It’s for four people and includes ceramic plates, cutlery, four glasses, a bottle opener and an insulated food bag. The hamper is big enough for sandwiches, scones and a bottle of Shloer, and adding an ice pack keeps food cooler for longer.

We chose the patio for our setup and used a Fab Hab Ibiza outdoor rug from Cuckooland. The teal pattern adds a bright splash of colour to the garden, and it’ll look great once we get an outdoor corner sofa. We laid the hamper on the rug, added cushions and a parasol for shade. Isla made the bunting herself, which was a lovely personal touch.

We stuck to classic picnic food: sandwiches cut into triangles, crisps, grapes and a bottle of Shloer to toast VE Day. The kids prefer finger food, which makes picnics easy, but the hamper’s cutlery means we can also pack salads or pasta when we want — it’s very versatile.

We had a lovely day celebrating VE Day, learning about its history during the week and watching footage from 75 years ago — it’s fascinating to see. What did you do for VE Day? Did you have a picnic at home?
