Proud to Be a Cheer Mum
You may have seen on social media that I’m now a cheer mum. Isla threw herself into it with real enthusiasm. She’s taken part in dance and cheerleading competitions and a few shows that have filled us with pride.

I didn’t know what to expect when she joined the squad. In the first term she was just learning routines and finding her feet, and suddenly the term ended and a competition was upon us. We spent a weekend watching incredible routines and getting to know the squad and the other cheer mums. I loved it, though it was exhausting.

Her first competitions ended in wins for her teams. Seeing them so happy, walking away with trophies and medals, was wonderful. Neither Isla nor I knew what this new chapter would bring, but she loved competing. It made all the training feel worthwhile and she was glowing.

Competition days are long, so you need plenty of food and drink. Being a cheer mum means cheering for your child and for the other teams too. There was great merchandise at the events — everyone wanted the cheer jackets, and now the kids wear them to club each week.

What stood out most was the noise — so many children and adults in one hall is overwhelming at first. You get used to it, though my ears did ring for a few hours after each day.

I’ve made some lovely friendships, which has been brilliant. It’s comforting to be with parents who understand what’s happening and to have someone to chat to between routines — Isla prefers to sit with her team, not with me!

We’re a very active family: Isla does cheerleading, dance, gymnastics and theatre classes, and this year she joined choir too — she’s due to perform at the O2 in January. Watching her grow in confidence and smile so much is amazing. We’re so proud of everything she tries.
