Nestled in the peaceful countryside of North Norfolk, Metton House is a charming, history-filled cottage that feels like a step back in time. Set away from the rush of modern life, it offers a quiet, characterful retreat.
A gated, storybook entrance sets the tone as you arrive. The house is full of character — every corner hints at past lives mixed with modern comforts. The children were delighted to find servant bells, one in the living room that would once have summoned help.
Inside, a practical entry area handles wet wellies, dripping coats and muddy boots — ideal after a day at the beach (only 15 minutes away) or a long walk. From there you can move into the kitchen/diner or the garden room. The living room, warmed by a crackling fireplace, is a cosy spot to read or relax and take in the calm of the surroundings.
The kitchen/diner has some lovely features, including an Aga (a fun new experience for us and a great source of warmth) and a useful island for preparing food. It’s well equipped with all the gadgets you need to cook with locally sourced ingredients or enjoy a slow breakfast while looking out over the large garden. The dining light fittings are beautiful and add to the room’s charm.
Upstairs, the bedrooms continue the cottage’s cosy feel with vintage furnishings and well-loved decor. Each room has its own character. The en suite with a roll-top bath was a favourite — a perfect place to soak, relax and catch up on a show while unwinding.
Outside, a lush garden surrounds the house, with plenty of spots to explore or sit and enjoy the view. There’s a summer house for quiet evenings, a bench overlooking the fields and family-friendly touches like a tree swing and a large trampoline.
Metton House also carries a sense of history. It used to be the Dowager house and part of the Felbrigg Estate, built by the Dowager after her husband died. The property has since been divided into several homes, but features like the servant bells remain as reminders of its past.
Practical details: the listing states it sleeps six across three bedrooms, but one of the beds isn’t suitable for an adult, so it comfortably sleeps five plus a child. There’s plenty of storage, and the living room cupboards hold books, games and movies. The TV is Wi‑Fi only, so you’ll need to log into apps to access shows.
There was a 10% discount on the property for bookings made up to 30 April 2024.
During our stay we explored nearby Cromer, Overstrand, Sheringham, Blakeney and Cley-next-the-Sea. Many beautiful North Norfolk spots are within a 15-minute drive, and some are walkable from the doorstep, making this a great location for a family break. Thanks to Norfolk Cottage Agency for finding such a lovely place.
