I’ve had so much feedback about our kitchen worktop makeover — it’s been lovely to see everyone’s questions and comments. I posted the project in the Frenchic Facebook group after painting the cupboards with Frenchic, and here are a few other DIY tips I’ve picked up that might be useful.
One of the most helpful suggestions I received was to use a head torch when fitting DC Fix vinyl to worktops. It makes working in low light so much easier and they’re not expensive. My husband uses one for evening kayaking and it’s handy for camping with the kids too.
I also bought a DC Fix applicator set, which proved essential. The craft knife cut the vinyl cleanly and accurately for edges around tiles and the ends of the worktops. The smoother helped remove air bubbles inch by inch. The big takeaway: get the right tools for the job. If you need power tools, choose good-quality ones and learn to use them safely before you start.
By a DIY kit I mean a small collection of go-to items you always have on hand for quick fixes and projects. I keep a shelf in the garage stocked with my favourite Frenchic colours, and when a tin runs out I buy another — even a tester pot — so I can touch up painted areas and keep finishes looking fresh.
My next projects are painting the garage to match the front door (I’ll write about that when it’s done), using a pot of “Smudge” to paint the windows to change the look of the house, finishing the worktop around the sink, installing a wallpaper splashback to cover the tiles, and painting a new fireplace this weekend. I’m excited to get them done.
I love candles — they make the house smell nice and help mask paint and glue smells while calming the nerves during a big project. I’m a fan of Price’s Candles for their scents and colours; sometimes I match or contrast them with the room to add a little definition.
Plenty to keep me busy. Do you enjoy DIY? What’s your next project? I’d love to see your tips and projects on social: @mummyconstant.
