Five fun activities for the May half-term
What are you doing this May half term? If you haven’t planned anything yet, here are some family-friendly ideas — for us in Cambridgeshire the break runs Monday 27 to Friday 31 May 2024, but you can look for similar options nearer to you.

Consider a family camping trip, whether in a campervan or a family tent. The Norfolk coast has many lovely campsites not far from Cambridgeshire — places like Kelling Heath or, further away, Woolacombe. Camping is great fun: cooking on a campfire, watching sunsets and spending the whole day outdoors.

Conkers is a brilliant day out for kids, with outdoor activity trails, a splash park, playgrounds and a fun train ride. If the weather turns, there are indoor rope courses, a 4D cinema and a soft-play area, so there’s plenty to keep everyone entertained.

Leicestershire also has lots to offer. Twin Lakes has an outdoor waterpark, and Wicksteed Park and Gulliver’s Land are both within easy reach of Cambridgeshire — perfect for a family day out.

If you don’t mind a bit more driving, our favourite indoor splash park is Water World. It’s packed with water slides, a wave pool, crazy golf and an on-site café — great for keeping kids busy for hours. Fancy trying the trap-door slide?

Don’t underestimate a day at the beach. Wells-next-the-Sea and Sea Palling are lovely family beaches whatever the weather. We’ve made lots of happy memories there and sometimes take a disposable BBQ for a simple afternoon feast.

Grafham and Rutland Water are ideal for a slower day outdoors. Both have large lakes with waterside walks, places to paddle on warm days, adventure playgrounds, crazy golf and Rumble Live. There are cafés and shops on site, or you can pack a picnic and relax by the water.

If you have any other fun ideas for the May half term, I’d love to hear them — they could inspire another family looking for adventures.
