Juggling full-time jobs, homeschooling, and everyday chores can be exhausting, but the memories that stick with us are the small moments of joy and togetherness. Those shared mealtimes have become one of our happiest routines, and we’ve kept them going ever since.
Family meals are more than food—they’re a chance to connect. Whether it’s a quick breakfast, a relaxed brunch, or a cosy dinner, sitting down together helps everyone unwind, talk, and strengthen bonds. Before the pandemic, my husband and I often ate late, sometimes as late as 9pm. I’m grateful that most days now we enjoy these meals together.
A few simple ideas can make mealtimes feel special. Involve everyone in planning the menu—let each person pick a favourite dish or help choose the week’s meals. That ownership brings variety and excitement. Our kids love planning and prepping an afternoon tea or running pretend restaurant nights.
We added a Triplo round dining table and chair set to our kitchen diner, and it’s made a big difference. The table catches the light and brightens the space, which used to feel dark because of the archway. When we moved in, the kitchen was painted bright yellow with oak units, which wasn’t our style. Since then we’ve painted the walls white and refreshed the cupboards with Cool Beans Frenchic paint. The new table fits the area well and makes it feel welcoming. The chairs are comfortable and swivel, which helps in the tighter space.
Putting a little thought into the table setting helps too. Try different tablecloths, colourful napkins, or handmade place cards to add fun. Play with lighting—dimming the lights can make the room feel more like a restaurant and encourage conversation.
Use mealtimes as a chance to put phones away and really listen to each other. Invite everyone to share something from their day and create a safe space for open conversation. It’s also a good time to teach kids about healthy, mindful eating.
Don’t be afraid to explore new recipes and cuisines. Tasting different ingredients and talking about where food comes from can spark curiosity and create lasting memories.
The goal isn’t just to eat together but to connect. Embrace these moments and cherish the time spent around the table. How do you make mealtimes fun with the kiddies?
