Discovering Chatsworth Estate’s Scenic Grounds
Chatsworth Estate is one of those places that never seems to lose its magic, tucked away in the Peak District. We had no set route; we let the day unfold, wandering through gardens, open parkland and riverside paths. It’s easy to make the walk as long or short as you like, which suits families, and I took some great photos along the way.

We parked at the Chatsworth Garden Centre and followed the river south to Beeley. A public footpath climbs the hill, crossing fields of horses and cows up to Beeley Hill Top Farm. From there we walked through heather-covered woodland and into the Chatsworth House gardens. We wandered past the waterfall and the Hunting Tower and paused for tea at Chatsworth House — it felt truly magical.

The grounds are spacious and varied. One moment you’re among formal gardens and sculptures, the next you’re beside the river looking back at the grand house. We found quiet corners, wide meadows and safe spots for the kids to explore while we took in the scenery.

What surprised me most was how peaceful the parkland felt despite its popularity. The paths are well kept and there’s always something to see — from historic bridges to the rolling hills beyond. We could easily have spent days exploring and discovered something new each time.

At our holiday cottage I read that a former owner of Chatsworth built stone “tents” across the estate so people walking the land would have somewhere safe to stay without carrying tents.

If you visit, wear comfortable shoes — you’ll walk further than you expect. The views pull you on and the landscape shifts with every few steps; time disappears before you notice. It really is as magnificent as it sounds.

If you enjoy scenic family days out like this, we also loved our trip to Carsington Water, which offers similar views and lovely places to explore.
