Chatsworth Estate is one of those places that never loses its magic, tucked away in the Peak District. We didn’t plan a formal route; we let the day unfold, wandering through the gardens, open parkland and along riverside paths. It’s a place where you can choose a long or short walk, perfect for families. I took some amazing photos on this walk, I hope you’ll agree!
We parked at the Chatsworth Garden Centre and walked south along the river toward Beeley. There’s a public footpath up the hill, through a field with horses and cows, to Beeley Hill Top Farm. From there you enter the heather-covered woodland, then cross into Chatsworth House gardens. We wandered through the woods, passed the waterfall and Hunting Tower, and stopped for tea at Chatsworth House. It felt magical.
The grounds feel spacious and varied. One moment you’re amid formal gardens and sculptures, the next you’re by the river, looking back at the house’s grandeur. We found quiet corners, open meadows, and safe places for the kids to explore while we absorbed the scenery.
What stood out most was how peaceful the parkland felt despite the crowds. The paths are well kept and there’s so much to see in every direction—from the estate’s historic bridges to the rolling hills beyond. We could have spent days exploring and seeing different things each time.
A book in our cottage after a walk around the grounds mentioned that a former owner of Chatsworth House had built stone tents across the estate so walkers could have somewhere safe to stay without carrying a tent.
If you’re visiting, wear comfortable shoes because you’ll likely walk further than you expect. The views pull you on, and the landscape changes with every step. It’s the kind of place where a day can slip away before you realize it. It was every bit as magnificent as it sounds.
If you enjoy scenic family days out like this, you might like our trip to Carsington Water, which also had stunning views and lovely places to explore. Feel free to leave a comment if Chatsworth is on your list or if you’ve walked the grounds before.
