Journey from a Cromford Bookshop to Matlock Bath
This walk combined lovely scenery, local history and a few unexpected delights. We began at Scarthin Books in Cromford, a charming, slightly quirky shop that sets the tone for a slow, wandering day before you even reach the river.

We followed a trail up the hill, discovering a few fun little tunnels on the way, and climbed to the area near the Heights of Abraham. Some sections felt tucked-away and peaceful, others opened out with wide views of the valley sides. The autumn colours made everything even more striking.

The route crosses from one side of the valley to the other. There’s a long, fairly flat stretch, but plenty of variety to keep it interesting: mills, old industrial buildings and reminders of Peak District heritage that give the walk real purpose as well as beauty. The kids loved spotting the treetops across the valley from the top of High Tor.

We arrived in Matlock Bath, crossed the river, climbed up to High Tor and followed a path along the hilltops before dropping back down through fields and around the mills. It’s a wonderful finish to a walk that begins in peaceful Cromford.

If you like walks that blend nature with a touch of history, you might enjoy our route from Monsal Head into Bakewell. Have you explored the Derwent Valley? It really is an underrated part of the Peak District.
