Leisurely family stroll around Carsington Water
We spent October half term in the Peak District and based ourselves in a cottage near Carsington Water. On our first day we walked around the reservoir — calm views, wide open paths and fresh air that instantly quieted the usual rush. We picked this route because it’s gentle and accessible for a family day out, though we did add one challenging climb.

We followed one of the shorter circular sections, keeping close to the water for most of the way. The paths are wide and mostly flat, ideal for little legs or an easy pace. The scenery shifts often — woodland, open water, wildlife areas and stretches where the hills reflect on the surface. We extended the route by walking from our cottage up a high hill, which added a steep climb and about two extra hours.

There are plenty of spots to stop for snacks, and we found a lovely, peaceful viewpoint away from the busier areas. Once we moved farther from the visitor centre it felt much quieter, even on a busy day. No one rushed; everyone simply enjoyed being outside together.

If you visit, try to arrive early to avoid the busiest times and leave time to explore the visitor centre afterwards. It’s a gentle way to start exploring the Peak District.

Our walk took just over five hours. We stopped for lunch on the east side of the lake and later had a hot drink at the visitor centre. In total we walked 18.73 km, from the top of the hill down to the dam.
