Keeping a mattress clean from day one matters — your sleep quality depends a lot on the surface you lie on. Whether your mattress is new or old, regular care should be part of your home-cleaning routine. Simply changing sheets and rotating the mattress isn’t always enough; a little extra attention will help it last longer.

Mattresses can trap dirt, germs, dust mites and even bedbugs, so cleaning is important, especially if you have allergies or let pets on the bed. Start by removing sheets and the mattress cover, then use your vacuum’s upholstery attachment to clean every surface, working in overlapping strokes to lift dust, dead skin and mites. If you suspect bedbugs, contact a pest-control professional for treatment.

To remove odors from sweat and general buildup, sprinkle baking soda over the bare mattress and gently rub it in. Let it sit for about 15 minutes, then vacuum it up.

Act quickly on spills to avoid stains setting in. For tough marks like urine or blood, mix about 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide with 1 tablespoon of uncolored liquid dish soap and 1 tablespoon of salt. Spread the paste over the stain and leave until it dries, about ten minutes. Scrape away the dried paste, then dab any remaining spot with a cloth dampened with hydrogen peroxide.

Once clean and dry, protect your mattress with a good mattress protector. It won’t prevent every stain or dust particle, but it makes future cleaning much easier and helps extend the life of the mattress.

Regular mattress cleaning improves sleep and helps your bed last longer. As mattresses age, consider replacing them — many people find it’s time for a new one after around eight years — but with consistent care you can keep yours fresh and comfortable for many years.
