Spring refresh: decluttering and resetting the family home
Lighter mornings and fresh spring air always make me want to fling open the windows and start clearing out every cupboard. I recently tackled the kids’ bedrooms and plan to do mine tomorrow — spring just feels like the right time for a proper family-wide reset.

The idea of decluttering the whole house felt overwhelming at first, so I began small: one drawer, one cupboard, one corner of a bedroom. Breaking it down into tiny tasks made it manageable and gave me the small wins that keep you going.

The “15-minute rule” helped a lot—set a timer, pick a zone, and focus. You’d be amazed how much you can get done in that short burst.

With children around, decluttering can be tricky, so I turned it into a game. Isla and Noah helped sort their toys into three piles: keep, donate, and recycle. They were surprisingly willing to part with things once they knew they were going to new homes.

I kept a little memory box for the genuinely sentimental bits I couldn’t let go of—baby shoes, handmade cards, tiny t-shirts I’ll never part with.

Now the house feels calmer. There’s less to tidy and clean, more space to enjoy being at home, and the kids are playing more creatively because everything’s easier to find. I’ve found myself feeling more relaxed too.
